Nik Obid is a young researcher at the Slovenian Migration Institute at ZRC SAZU. His research focuses on social, historical, and economic transformations in the broader cross‑border area, which he connects with topics of (contemporary) migration. He is also interested in cultural and technical heritage and its interpretation. Under the mentorship of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ksenija Šabec and Assist. Prof. Dr. Jernej Mlekuž, he is pursuing a PhD in Sociology within the interdisciplinary Humanities and Social Sciences programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana.
Nik Obid graduated in 2019 with a degree in Cultural History from the School of Humanities at the University of Nova Gorica, and in 2022 completed his master’s studies in Intercultural Management at the School of Advanced Social Studies in Nova Gorica. In both his thesis, he focused on the Bohinj Railway, placing it within historical, economic, socio‑geographical, and tourism contexts. For his master’s thesis State of Traffic and Developmental Opportunities on the Bohinj Railway, he received the Gosar Award and the Alpine Convention Young Academics Award – Infopoint Prize in 2024. During both stages of his studies, he also participated in various student research projects. His research work is interdisciplinary, positioned at the intersection of history and sociology. He studies contemporary migration processes, particularly modern emigration and the national and ethnic identities of emigrants. In addition, his research interests include historical topics related to the broader Alpine region and heritage‑related activities, through which he is engaged in the preservation and interpretation of the technical railway heritage of the Bohinj Railway.
