Description

We invite you to the lecture "Vocal Intimacy: Home-recordings of Homesickness and the Memory of Voice", which will take place on Thursday, 29 May 2025, at 11:00, in the Križevniška and Gosposka Halls at ZM GIAM ZRC SAZU, Gosposka ulica 16, Ljubljana.

The lecture will be given by Panayotis Panopoulos, anthropologist and professor at the University of the Aegean. Based on a set of rare 1950s acetate records recorded in the US by Greek migrant Konstantinos Chronis and later discovered at an Athens flea market, the lecture explores how voice, sound, and memory intertwine across time and place.

Through ethnographic encounters and artistic collaborations, Panopoulos traces the journey of these recordings back to their roots in rural Greece, revealing the emotional and cultural power of vocal traces within diasporic communities.

About the speaker:
Panayotis Panopoulos is Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of the Aegean. His research focuses on sound, music, and performance in contemporary Greece. He has collaborated with numerous artists and participated in documenta 14 (Athens/Kassel, 2017), and has held visiting positions at Princeton and Berkeley.
