The 60th issue of Dve domovini/Two Homelands, Slovenia’s leading journal for migration studies, has just been published—marking a significant milestone since its first issue in 1990. The journal was founded to provide a dedicated academic space for researchers focused on migration, a field that has only grown in relevance over the decades.

Importantly, Two Homelands is not an emigrant newsletter—it was created to serve the academic community. Emigrant communities had publications such as Rodna gruda, and a wide range of Slovenian diaspora newspapers have existed since the late 19th century. These have been comprehensively chronicled by Dr. Janja Žitnik Serafin in her book Doba velikih migracij na Slovenskem.

The journal’s founding editor was Dr. Andrej Vovko, and over the years, several others have continued to shape its editorial direction. As of this year, editorial leadership has been taken over by Dr. Marijanca Ajša Vižintin and Dr. Kristina Toplak, both affiliated with the Institute for Slovenian Migration Institute at ZRC SAZU. As the Institute’s research focus has evolved—from its early days centred on emigration to its current broader engagement with migration as a global phenomenon—so too has the scope of the journal. Migration, after all, is a fundamental part of human history.

This anniversary issue, prepared in collaboration with the Sociomedical Institute at ZRC SAZU, has a special theme on migrants' mental health. It brings together a variety of articles exploring topics such as the psychological well-being of refugees, the mental health challenges faced by migrant farm workers, and more. One contribution focuses on Slovenians repatriated from Venezuela, examining the psychological difficulties they face and the support provided by the Slovenian government.

To celebrate this important issue, a public event and roundtable discussion will take place this October in the ZRC Atrium, where the journal’s content and ongoing mission will be presented and discussed.
