Špela Kastelic graduated with a Master's degree in Anthropology of Popular Cultures in 2015 (Faculty of Ethnography and Cultural Anthropology, University of Ljubljana - CREOLE programme). During her studies, she participated in student exchanges in Spain and Sweden and undertook study placement and research fieldwork in Barcelona. Between 2011 and 2016, she worked as a research assistant in various NGOs in advocacy, culture, and youth. For several years, she volunteered as a study aid for migrants and asylum seekers in Ljubljana. Between 2015 and 2016, she worked as a protection information field assistant in the framework of the UNHCR/PiC mission on the South-Eastern Slovenian-Croatian border. Since November 2016, she has worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Slovenian Emigration and Migration. As a technical expert, dissemination expert and project manager, she works mainly on international projects (Interreg, Amif, Erasmus+) focusing on migration, environmental protection and migrant integration. She has also served as co-editor of the AEMI Journal, an expert-scientific journal.
Since 2017, she has been enrolled in the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Programme in Environmental Protection (University of Ljubljana). Her doctoral research focuses on climate change, climate vulnerability and migration. As part of her PhD studies, she participated in the EDGE International Summer School on Environmental Change and Migration, organised by HUGO Observatory, University of Liège.
