The aim of the bilateral research is to examine the extent and the ways in which both “immigrant” languages (Slovenian in Macedonia and Macedonian in Slovenia) are reflected in the majority culture and vice versa, the degree and the ways in which the majority society and culture affect them – not only today but also in historical perspective.
On the basis of research results, we will try to shape some guidelines for an effective affirmation of “immigrant” languages in the receiving society and for successful intercultural communication. We will also try to find out whether – by comparing emigrant situations of our nation with immigrant situations of other ethnic groups within our own state borders – we can increase the sensibility of the national majority to unintentional language and social-cultural marginalization of immigrants.
